This blog was an experiment using web blogging with international students at the University of Toronto's English Conversation program. I had just graduated from U of T's TESOL program and I was asked to teach a blogging course through the International Student Centre's English Conversation Program.
I spent the first of 8 sessions setting up the blogs with students and quickly realized that they were really just interested in conversation and meeting new friends while at school in Toronto.
We spent 8 weeks together meeting and touring around Toronto. It's was voluntary and they participated when they didn't have course work to complete or social activities. I often proofread their essays for them. They seldom posted about their experiences. All the students have graduated and returned to their own countries or they are in post-graduate studies. I keep in contact with some of them through Facebook. It was a great experience but not a very successful blogging project.

Let's meet for dinner this Friday, March 30 - 7 PM
Hang with writers and media-types and maybe become a character sketch in the next great Canadian novel. An unpretentious place with a friendly atmosphere and lots of very engaged conversation, it can literally buzz here on busy nights and seating is often at a premium. Daytime, sink into the large patio, watch Bloor Street go by and let the day slip away delightfully. Stay long enough to have a bite of Italian, or just get wired on specialty coffees or chase it with some beer. Dooney's isn't complicated, it just works--and yeah, they won that "battle" with Starbuck's.

No Ruz is coming!

No Ruz, new day or New Year as the Iranians call it, is a celebration of spring Equinox. It is the most cherished of all the Iranian festivals and is celebrated by all. This occasion has been renowned in one form or another by all the major cultures of ancient Mesopotamia. What we have today as No Ruz with its’ uniquely Iranian characteristics has been celebrated for at least 3000 years and is deeply rooted in the rituals and traditions of Zoroastrian belief system of the Sassanian period.
